South Africa is currently ranked number one in Africa and ninth in the world, in terms of prison population with 160 000 inmates. This was announced by Minister of Correctional Services Sibusiso Ndebele in Polokwane last night.

Ndebele was presenting rewards for excellence to staff members. He says every month 23 000 inmates exit Correctional Centres while at the same time 25 000 are admitted. The minister says being number one in Africa and nine in the world isn’t a good statistic, something that the country has to do something about.
According to Ndebele, such high inmate numbers cost the taxpayer R8 000 a month for each inmate, saying: “So when they say you must rot in jail you must know it's R8 000 a month for each inmate.”

It was at the same awards ceremony that 28-year-old Aaron Mkauhuru, a newspaper vendor who raised the alarm when eight dangerous prisoners escaped from the Pretoria Prison last year, was given a bravery award and R5 000 by Ndebele.

The Zimbabwean national was selling newspapers in the street when he noticed prisoners trying to escape. Mkauhuru then rushed to the main gate to alert the prison authorities. All the prisoners were rearrested while they were escaping. Mkauhuru says he is grateful for the award.
Meanwhile, Ndebele says his department will this year be renaming various correctional services institutions in honour of those who suffered for justice and freedom in the country.

The Correctional Services Annual National Corrections Excellence Awards honour dedicated staff members for excellence in carrying out their duties. Ndebele told hundreds of people, including judges and his Deputy Ngoako Ramatlhodi, that this year the Pretoria Management area will be renamed King Mampuru the 2nd Management area. King Mampuru was a Bapedi traditional leader in Limpopo who was executed in 1883.
